As an experienced Embedded Gen/SSEG/C&I project developer with a strong track record of delivery this is a next level career opportunity. You will manage projects on time and on budget, through the full project development cycle. Although your focus is on the detailed technical project assessment and design, and ensuring proposals meet the needs of clients, and then ensuring they are financially viable, you will be involved in the business development process in support of the BD Executive. You will be responsible for designing the project based on the opportunity and ensuring delivery.

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

As an experienced project developer, you will be responsible for managing all elements of the technical design, development and delivery of the Project. Specifically you’ll drive the assessment of the opportunity (feasibility studies, solutions design, costing, delivery client proposals) through to delivering a portfolio of fully permitted and financeable projects.

Specific KPIs include, but are not limited to:
  • You will be employed as a Project Technical Designer Engineer with the principle responsibility for developing Genesis’ solar and small scale embedded generation (SSEG) & hybrid portfolio that resides under Touchpoint Energy.
  • The incumbent will responsible for providing project technical design and development services in order to design, develop and build an investable portfolio of projects, and ensure these are delivered, either as stand-alone projects or through co-development or co-investment with other industry players.

Specific areas of responsibility include:

  • project design, engineering and development – secure, design develop, and oversee the implementation of a portfolio of C&I projects utilizing solar, storage, hybrid and other suitable technologies;
  • project modelling – complete project technical and financial modelling (including costing and EPC work) in order to ensure projects reach fundability stage and are bankable;
  • project management – identify, secure, fully permit and develop embedded generation and smart technology projects under the Touchpoint banner;
  • partnership development – develop, or leverage existing partnerships and supplier relationships that will assist in expediting Touchpoint’s entry into the South and Sub-Saharan African market;
  • business development – working under guidance from the business development executive, who will provide specific and detailed guidance in the definition of key objectives and tasks from time to time, to build the Touchpoint portfolio into a fully operational and successful standalone business focused on the SSEG, DG and C&I rooftop markets primarily in South but also Sub-Saharan Africa;
  • utility scale projects – provide support to GEED in the design, development and implementation of specific solar PV and storage projects.

Specific Objectives and outputs:

Responsible for achieving the agreed set of project development objectives as outlined above, but for the avoidance of doubt specific objectives are:

  • Scope and assess project opportunities, compile proposals, quote to clients, sell and close, and then manage project delivery i.e. manage project design and implementation in consultation with the Client and business development executive;
  • Manage client relations and provide constant client interface during from inception to construction through to commercial operation in order to ensure repeat business from clients;
  • Provide support to the business development executive in formulating proposals, ensuring technical soundness and managing client expectations;
  • Build the EPC capacity in order to ensure project specifications are met at the least cost;
  • Responsible for ensuring a proper design and proposal tracking processes is in place for identifying, securing, developing and permitting the agreed projects;
  • Deliver weekly and monthly progress reporting – projects are to be tabled, agreed and reported on at weekly business development meetings – this includes developing a comprehensive development budget for each project together with the business development executive;
  • Manage partner opportunities (Ekhurhuleni e.g.) though identification of critical path development issues, feasibility assessments, development and permitting processes (in particular property developer and owner liaison; land owner negotiation support; permit acquisition and applications; stakeholder interaction, solution development and design in the case of integrated smart village or smart grid technology solutions) in order to ensure fully permitted and viable projects – in particular to secure the projects for final close and financing;
  • reviewing and securing permits for the current proposed portfolio of solar and SSEG projects, from acquisition and early permitting through fully permitted and finance ready sites and ensuring all projects are developed/permitted along best practice guidelines;
  • advising the Company on new technology developments (storage, batteries, smart grid technology, mobility solutions, green design and development) and ensuring relevant and timely updating on marketplace and technology development/enhancement/innovation;
  • updating the company and team on changing regulatory requirements as well as market changes (technology, investment trends, projects, etc) with regard to EPC and manufacturing supplier trends that will assist in developing the company’s ability to develop and implement cutting edge smart energy solutions;
  • identify areas for improvement and development of project management processes as well as general office support services particularly in relation to business development, project development, permitting, reporting and asset management; and,
  • assistance with land and permit negotiations, and/or the formulation of any proposals in relation to project preparation for other projects during the finance raising and investment process.

You will also provide project development support to larger scale projects in the Genesis portfolio and this will be discussed with you on an ongoing basis. This will inter alia include providing development support to current projects requiring resource analysis, early stage yield assessments and preliminary design work for PV layouts, design and battery integration. You will interface with appointed specialists and consultants to help finalise early stage development work on the portfolio of projects.

Qualifications and Certification:
  • An Honours Degree in Engineering (Electrical or Mechanical) is critical. Master’s Degree in Engineering is a distinct advantage (Mechanical or Electrical). Post Graduate Diploma in business studies, project management (with a focus on renewable energy projects) or energy finance will be highly advantageous.
  • Registration with ECSA or other associated professional bodies is highly advantageous.
  • PV GreenCard or PQRS registration a distinct advantage.
  • PMI Certification or equivalent is a distinct advantage.
Competence, skills and experience:
  • Minimum of 4 years working in SSEG/C&I project development with strong technical experience and expertise.
  • Sound understanding of the SEEG energy industry in South Africa and very strong knowledge and understanding of the technical and regulatory requirements to develop and implement projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with legal, regulatory and Government stakeholders is key.
  • Well versed in conducting project assessments and feasibility studies, and motivating projects to senior management and investment teams.
  • Demonstrated experience in technical design, defining project specs, BOQ compilation and reviews, project costing and modelling, ability to manage supplier relationships.
  • Sound understanding of grid connection requirements and managing CEL and Budget Quote applications to grid operators, and accurately costing grid connection requirements.
  • Proficiency in using PVSyst or other design software (e.g PVSOL, Homer), AutoCAD is essential. Microsoft Office Suite in particular ability to use Excel for project financial modelling is a requirement.

You will work closely with and report directly to the Business Development Executive of the SSEG Division in Cape Town.

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

As an experienced project developer and senior member of the development team, you will be responsible for managing all phases of the Business and Project Development process from assessment of the opportunity, (due diligence, feasibility study, investment memorandum, budgets) through to delivering a portfolio of fully permitted projects.

Specific KPIs include, but are not limited to:

  • Site selection, acquisition and rights securement: evaluating, selecting and developing of a portfolio of projects from pre-feasibility through to fully developed, ready-to-build or bankable projects;
  • Ensure all projects are fully permitted and authorised whether for government (national or municipal procurement), private sector tender calls, or bi-lateral and private sector off-take arrangements;
  • Conduct technical due diligence of sites and projects with a particular view to ensuring technical feasibility (based on our site selection criteria), including grid connection solutions;
  • Guide and manage a project development support team ensuring support services are delivered to enable the project i.e. resource measurement campaigns. GIS support, EIA’s and permitting acquisition, project tracking and management. This will include project management with our international partners;
  • Develop and maintain sound relations with Eskom, regulatory and permitting authorities, local authorities, ports authorities and service providers to ensure projects are delivered on time, innovative grid connection solutions are developed for projects;
  • Work closely with owners engineers, OEM’s and EPC providers to ensure proper specs are provided and project financial modelling is accurate;
  • Provide leadership in preparing and submitting projects to various bidding programmes and tender calls, including finance raising and commercial negotiations;
  • Produce weekly/monthly project progress reports for senior management.

  • Sound understanding of the energy industry in South Africa and very strong knowledge and understanding of the requirements to develop and bid a project in the South African environment.
  • Sound, demonstrable knowledge of the energy regulatory environment in South Africa and ability to work with legal, regulatory and Government stakeholders is key.
  • Well versed in conducting project feasibility studies and motivating projects to senior management and investment teams.
  • Experience in managing EIA programmes, wind resource assessments campaigns through to preliminary site resource assessment using software such as Wasp, WindPro, Windfarm or similar, is required.
  • Sound understanding of grid connection requirements and managing CEL and Budget Quote applications to grid operators.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite in particular ability to use Excel for project financial modelling.

As a Senior Project Development Executive you will work closely with and report directly to the Project Director or Head of Project Development in Cape Town. You will work very closely with an international team and be required to travel to local sites regularly and conclude some international travels from time to time.

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

As a seasoned and experienced member of the development team, with a track record of delivery, you will be responsible for the delivery of projects from inception through to project implementation. You know what it takes to get a project from greenfields through to construction. You are innovative and able to develop solutions that address client needs as the market changes and evolves in South Africa.

The role includes business development (sourcing new opportunities) as well as project development and execution, (acquisition or prospecting through to assessment – due diligence, project acquisition, signing of land agreements, project budgets, feasibility assessments, securing permits, financial modelling) resulting in the delivery of fully permitted projects, ready for financing. You’ll be comfortable to take the project through bidding, financing and on to full implementation if required to do so.

Specific KPIs include, but are not limited to:

  • Site and project acquisition (whether greenfield or established projects): evaluating, selecting and developing of a portfolio of projects from pre-feasibility through to fully developed, bid ready and bankable projects;
  • Conduct resource assessments, develop initial site designs, lead negotiations with land owners to secure land rights, manage the EIA processes and liaise with various permitting authorities;
  • Ensure all projects are fully permitted and authorised (knowledge of land agreements and securing land properly), so that projects are bid ready and bankable, whether for government (national or municipal procurement), private sector tender calls, or bi-lateral and private sector off-take arrangements;
  • Conduct technical due diligence of sites and projects, with a particular view to ensuring the technical feasibility of projects (based on our site selection criteria), including developing grid connection solutions, applying for CEL’s and Budget Quotes, technical design layouts and site development plans;
  • Develop and maintain sound relations with Eskom (ensuring different grid options are properly canvassed, developed via grid studies etc), permitting authorities, local authorities and service providers to ensure projects are delivered on time and innovative grid connection solutions are developed for projects;
  • Work closely with owners engineers, OEM’s and EPC providers to ensure proper specs are provided and project financial modelling is completed;

Qualifications and Certification:

Competence, skills and experience:
  • Minimum of 6 years working in Renewable Energy development and / or Project Management with at least 3 at a supervisory or management level. You are competent in the use of project management tools and reporting.
  • Well versed in conducting project feasibility studies and motivating projects to senior management and investment teams.
  • You have experience in developing a project from greenfields/early stage and seeing it through the financing cycle, and on to implementation.
  • Strong project management skills, as well as demonstrated ability to develop and manage project budgeting and expense tracking.
  • Experience in the Government and private sector offtake markets or PPP arrangements. Having taken projects through to financial close is an advantage.
  • Strong experience in conducting resource assessment campaigns through to preliminary site yield assessments and design, incorporating storage solutions, using various software packages as required. This will include working with various service providers to provide certain of these services.
  • Strong technical knowledge of grid connection requirements, managing CEL and budget quote applications and liaising with grid operators and the Eskom IPP Grid Access Unit and other key Eskom and local Government electricity authorities.
  • Managing a team of project developers to deliver a portfolio of wind/solar/storage or hybrid projects.
